Wrangler or Gladiator
A four-door Wrangler Unlimited is the everyday choice: five seats, a real cargo area behind them, and the roof that makes the whole thing worth it. A Gladiator adds an open bed, which suits boards, bikes, and anything that comes back from the beach still dripping.
Both drive comfortably on the highway at island speeds. Neither is a compromise for a week that mixes town driving with coast driving.
Open-air driving, done well
The Hawaiʻi sun is stronger than it feels with the wind moving. Sunscreen on the tops of arms and knees, a hat that fastens, and water within reach make an open-top day far better than the same day without them.
Loose items go in the cargo area rather than on a seat. At 55 miles per hour with the top back, a beach towel becomes somebody else's problem.
